  • Der Papyrus ist annähernd vollständig. Lediglich die erste Seite weist größere Beschädigungen auf und ist teilweise fragmentiert. Ca. in der horizontalen Mitte ist der Papyrus geteilt und heute auf zwei Museen verteilt, sodass sich hier verschiedentlich Fehlstellen finden (siehe Capart/Gardiner, Le papyrus Léopold II aux Musées Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire de Bruxelles et le Papyrus Amherst à la Pierpont Morgan Library, Taf. 1–4).

      Comment on this place: Inhaltlich befasst sich der Papyrus mit Ereignissen in Theben und wurde vermutlich dort aufbewahrt. Mit großer Sicherheit ist Deir el-Medineh als Fundort auszuschließen: „[T]he local officials did not have the authority to deal with such cases, and as soon as they came to the at-tention of the vizier’s office, the suspects were whisked off for interrogation elsewehre” (McDowell, A. G. (1999): Village Life in Ancient Egypt. Laundry Lists and Love Songs; New York, 165).

    Der obere Teil des Papyrus wurde von Leopold Ludwig Philipp Maria Viktor, Herzog von Brabant (der spätere König Léopold II.) während seiner Ägyptenreise, 1854 oder 1862-1863 erworben und in einer „funerary statuette“ des Chai nach Europa transportiert. Der Papyrus wurde am 05. Februar 1935 in der Statuette von Jean Capart entdeckt (Capart/Gardiner/van de Walle, Ramesside Tomb-Robberies, 169–170).

    Der untere Teil des Papyrus wurde zu einem unbekannten Zeitpunkt von William Amhurst Tyssen-Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Hackney (1835–1909) erworben (Brunner, H. (1982): s. v. Papyri Amherst; in: LÄ IV; Wiesbaden, Sp. 673). Die Erwerbung muss vor 1873 erfolgt sein, denn in diesem Jahr wurde der Papyrus erstmal von Chabas in einem Faksimile publiziert (Newberry, Amherst Papyri, 23). 1912 wurde der Papyrus von J. Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913) aus dem Nachlass von Amhurst gekauft und befindet sich seitdem in der nach ihm benannten Bibliothek (https://www.themorgan.org/manuscript/351045, geöffnet am 10.02.2025).

  • Der Papyrus trägt eine Datumsangabe, wonach die darin beschriebene Untersuchung im 16. Regierungsjahr Ramses IX. stattfand (konkret wurde der Papyrus nach Ausweis der Datumsangabe am 23. Tag des dritten Monats der Achet-Jahreszeit niedergeschrieben).
