  • nfrw: The orthography of nfrw resonates closely with the plural, ideographic writing of the word for obelisks and later the word for flagstaffs. Given its central meanings of perfection and completeness, I have associated it with the pinnacles or tops of the obelisks and doorframes (Frood, Biographical texts from Ramessid Egypt, Leiden/Boston 2007: 42), but such an extended meaning seems unparalleled. Either way, its repeated use heightens the poetic treatment of the temple’s cosmological and celestial character.

  • This refers to the now fragmentary red granite obelisks that may have been partially surrounded by a doorway during the reign of Nectanebo I or during the Roman period (PM II² 208, (1, 2); Barguet, Le temple d'Amon-Rê à Karnak: essai d’exégèse (re-edition).
