  • The three barques whose construction is narrated at the end of Bakenkhons’ text are, like the temple, objects that facilitate communication between inner and outer worlds. Both barques, flagpoles, and obelisks are among the elements that are visible outside the temple and the city. Grallert (Bauen - Stiften - Weihen [ADAIK 18], Berlin 2001: vol. I, 259) discusses the prestige attributed to constructing barques in 18th Dynasty biographies; barques are usually mentioned first and always closely associated with the king’s image. In Bakenkhons’ text they are the culmination, extending the temple’s reach beyond its precinct. Barques are also unusually mentioned in the inscriptions on the single obelisk; Bakenkhons’ text may cite this too (Urk. IV, 1552, 3–10; Grallert 2001: I, 325, n. 2).
