I recommend that this lemma should be made obsolete. jnd.t is not recorded by the Wb. Instead, Van der Molen provides an entry for jnd.t in his Dictionary of Coffin Texts with the meaning “sadness” (Van der Molen 2000: 42). A reference is given to Coffin Text Spell 335. In this spell, the deceased relates:
𓊃𓐍𓂋𓂡𓈋𓅱𓏏𓅫𓀀𓂧𓂋𓂡𓇋𓈖𓂧𓏏𓅫𓀀 (De Buck IV: 1951: 208)
sḫr(=j) ḏw.t=j dr(=j) jnd.t=j
“(I) overthrew my evil, (I) expelled my ‘sadness’.”
Other copies of this spell contain the lexeme nj.t “wrongdoing” (Wb 2, 201.7) in place of jnd.t (de Buck IV: 1951: 208). It must be “seriously considered, therefore whether jnd.t is an erroneous writing of nj.t” (Jenkins 2021: 138). It is striking to observe that there are no attestations of jnd (verb or noun) whereby an “individual alleviates their own jnd” (Jenkins 2021: 139). Instead, this can only be achieved by external parties, such gods and goddesses, the king and the elite (Jenkins 2021: 138–39). As such, I argue in favour of amending this text to read:
sḫr(=j) ḏw.t=j dr(=j) {jnd.t}〈nj.t〉=j
“(I) overthrew my evil, (I) expelled my 〈wrongdoing〉.”
Recommendation: ‘jnd.t’ should be lemmatised under nj.t “wrongdoing” (Wb 2, 201.7) Lemma 79830.
