Inscribed above the scene is the hieroglyphic sign of two outstretched arms with a loaf of bread resting between them, which writes the Egyptian word ka, “life-force”, and may represent this aspect of the god. The sign is flanked by four ears on the left and two eyes on the right. Pinch (1993, 246–64, esp. 258) suggests these probably symbolize Ptah’s capacity to see and hear. This is almost certainly the case for hearing (e.g. Morgan 2004; Toye-Dubs 2016), but the eyes are probably meant to be those of Neferabu himself, given their position in the lunette to the right where an owner would normally be, and the emphasis on the loss and regaining of sight in the text.
