- šꜣj: I follow here Osing (Das Grab des Nefersecheru, 1992, 53 n. bd), who reads the snake hieroglyph as šꜣy ‘fate’. As he observes, this writing is attested in Graeco-Roman texts and is appropriate to the context of Nefersekheru’s speech. A reading as ḥfꜣw might also be possible: ‘there will be no snake (ḥfꜣw) for (i.e. against) him’. A comparable concept is found in Old Kingdom threat-formulae: ‘May the crocodile be against him in water, the snake (ḥfꜣw) against him on land – (i.e.) the one who will do anything against this tomb’ (Urk. I, 23, 11–13; 226, 12–5). Nefersekheru may be alluding to the language of these ancient curses.
