  • - wrḏ jb=f r mdwi̯.t: Wurde früher als Umschreibung für einen schwachen Puls verstanden, weil in Fall 1 (Kol. 1.8; ergänzt nach Eb 854a = pEbers Kol. 99.5) das Klopfen des Herzens bzw. das Spüren des Pulses mit dem Reden (mdwi̯) des Herzens umschrieben wird (Breasted, Surgical Papyrus, 178; Grundriß IV/2, 141, Anm. 2; Westendorf, Papyrus Edwin Smith, 42, Anm. 2; Westendorf, Erwachen, 1992, 132; Nunn, Egyptian Medicine, 181; Westendorf, Handbuch Medizin, 716; vgl. schon Lefebvre, Essai sur la médecine égyptienne, 182, Anm. 2 als Alternativerklärung). In neueren Interpretationen wird "Herz" im Sinne von "Geist" verstanden: der Patient ist zu erschöpft, um zu reden (Chapman, in: JARCE 29, 1992, 36, Anm. 10; Sanchez/Meltzer, Edwin Smith Papyrus, 78; so schon Ebbell, Alt-ägyptische Chirurgie, 25).
