  • - tp-ḥsb and jws.w: The 19th dynasty tomb biography of Anhurmose from Mashayikh (Ockinga and al-Masri, Two Ramesside tombs at el Mashayikh, 1988) provides parallels for this phraseology, further supporting Osing’s separation of the clauses, although the passage is partly lost in Anhurmose’s text (Osing, Grab des Nefersecheru, 46, 48 n. b with refs.). The metaphor of the individual as balance, also occurring in Anhurmose’s biography, is suggested by Fischer-Elfert (in: GM 143, 1994, 45–6) to be an allusion to the Teaching of Ptahhotep which begins by stating the intention for the words ‘to be the standard of perfect speech (r-tp-ḥsb n-mdt-nfrt)’. He also suggests that jwsw may evoke the Eloquent Peasant: ‘It is the standard of God’s word. If it is scales, it tilts not (tp-ḥsb pw n mdw nṯr jwsw pw n gsꜣ.n=f)’ (Parkinson, The Tale of Sinuhe and other ancient Egyptian poems, 1997, 73).
