ḫꜣm: A play with meaning. Assmann (1978, 33, n. x) observes that the transitive use of ḫꜣm is related to concepts of ownership in the examples given in the Wörterbuch (III, 231, 8–10; see also the Bilgai endowment stela, KRI IV, 342, 11–2; 343, 3). Assmann’s rendering ‘worship’, proposed by analogy with the intransitive use ‘to bow to’ (Wb. III, 231, 3–11), is appropriate to the hymn context, although concepts of ‘possession, ownership’ may also be evoked in a space where Hathor and her cult objects are so visibly present. Intransitive ḫꜣm is usually gestural, determined with the arm or a bending figure. But here it has the man with hand to mouth determinative, so it may have an extended meaning to do with spoken praise as well as physical deference.
